Cabin-to-Cabin Noise

Cabin-to-Cabin noise (acoustic privacy) is very important onboard luxury Yachts. The quieter a Yacht becomes the more important this becomes. Toilet flushing, voices, TV / Audio noise etc becomes annoying in case you do not prefer to hear noise coming out of other cabins / rooms.

S.T.C (Sound Transmission Class) is one of the possibilities to express the level of comfort you require. As shown above STC 25 indicates that normal speech can be heard easily (meaning a simple plywood panel as separation wall). STC 45 stands for a coupled separation wall based on a wooden framing (50 mm filled with a mineral wool) and sound reducing sandwich panels on each side (required amount of space approx. 75 mm).

STC 53 stands for a double decoupled separation wall in which the principle is the same as the STC 45 wall however in this case both walls are disconnected from each other (required amount of space approx. 120 mm)

Important parameters related to cabin-to-cabin noise

  • Composition of the separation wall
  • Composition of the floor panel (related to foot step noise)
  • Flanking noise (noise transmitted over the ceiling panels)
  • Finishing of the room (reverberation time) such as carpet instead of hard reflecting material

The above mentioned parameters, as well as cabin-to-cabin noise, must be discussed with interior designers in an early stage of the project as it (can) affect space and finishing of a cabin or room.

Ones cabin-to-cabin noise becomes an issue (annoying after the yacht is finished, it is NOT easy to improve this situation as all interior finishing’s installed already!
